Twenty years in technology: twelve of them in digital agencies, six in startups, and enough of both to know they break in different places. Agencies drown in concurrent work and thin margins; startups drown in optimism. The engineering answer is rarely more people.
I started out building things, and I still read the code. Before Alpha44 I held engineering leadership roles in agency and startup teams, and earlier worked at BBC Worldwide and at CERN — two places that teach you very quickly what happens when systems are used harder than they were designed for.
Along the way, I work for over forty brands across motorsport, automotive, sport, pharmaceuticals and media. That's the part that makes me useful to agencies: I've sat on both sides of the client table and I know which promises are safe to make.
Alpha44 exists because that experience is more useful spread across a few companies than spent in one. It is deliberately one person. If a job needs a team, I'll tell you that and help you hire it.
